Until recently, my research was exclusively focused on a range of fundamental ‘blue skies’ questions central to theories of language, memory and perception. Questions include: How is knowledge represented in the mind/brain? How is information learned? How is information processed? In a large ERC grant entitled Generalisation in Mind and Machine I have also been exploring whether the artificial neural networks popular in computer science function in a similar way to brains. More recently I have also become interested in whether insights from psychology, linguistics and neuroscience can contribute to improving education, specifically, literacy instruction. I’ve summarized some of my research in the above links.
